Welcome

History “expands our conception and understanding of what it means to be human.” – Historian Carl Degler

I am a U.S. historian who enjoys rummaging about in the archives, reading and learning and writing about people in the past. I also love teaching and involving my students in “doing history.” The subject is rich, meaningful, and highly relevant. History informs who we are, where—and how—we live.  As novelist James Baldwin wrote, “History does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do.”
